Maple Turned Bowl (1/23/2007) This turning is a classic salad bowl shape from sugar maple. The diameter is about 10", the thickness is about 1/8", and the finish is buffed danish oil. I wanted to shoot for something a little thinner than I'd normally make, and I don't think I'll be going this thin again - it seems a little too dainty and fragile for my taste. There are also a few minor issues with the form, and although the roughed-out bowl was soaked in DNA and dried for several weeks it still warped a little as I was finish turning. I kept a smidgen of heartwood in this piece, and I think it gives a nice accent to a rather plain piece of wood. © Copyright 2007 Chris Billman |
