Picture Frames (Various Years) I tend to take on a small project or two in between larger scale furniture projects. Things like boxes, pens, small gifts, and turned bowls have provided some relief from the seriousness of furniture. They provide a bit of a break from big projects, and allow me to gain or refine skills that can be applied to future furniture pieces. Here are a few examples of simple picture frames that I've completed:
And here's a recent frame with a cross-section of the molding showing which router bit profiles I used. Note that I generally don't start one of these frames with detailed plans for the molding profiles. Instead I pull out my router bit inventory and start adding them together to create a pleasing design.
Update Oct 3 2006: I was asked to make a few picture frames for family and friends. I knocked these out between major projects, and the recepients are happy with them. A beveled cherry frame finished with danish oil:
